Doug Hiser
Artist Events
Doug Hiser, an international wildlife conservation artist, is coming to the NRV!
Wednesday, October 15th: 7:00-5:00, Eastern Montgomery High School in Elliston, VA:
Selected students of Eastern Montgomery High School will be involved in the creation of a local wildlife mural. The mural will be approximately 6’x6’ and will be made in such a way that it can be disassembled and moved around the New River Valley. During “MUSTANG HOUR,” various groups of students will be able to come to the auditorium and see what is happening with the mural. Doug will also be giving a slide presentation to the students regarding his participation in wildlife conservation and his travels around the world photographing animals. He uses these photos as a reference for his wildlife paintings. As a retired art schoolteacher, his desire is to inspire and educate students. After the school day has ended at 2:50-5:00 pm, the public is invited and encouraged to come to the school’s auditorium and observe the artist and students at work.
Thursday, October 16th: 9:00-5:00, Meadowbrook Community Center in Shawsville, VA
Thursday is a no-school day for students. Thus, the mural will be moved to the Meadowbrook Community Center, and they will work on the mural until it is finished. The public is encouraged to attend and support the students in their efforts. Friday, October 17th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, YMCA at VA Tech in Blacksburg, VA: Mr. Hiser will be doing a live painting of a real bird – Captain Jack, an American Kestrel. As he works, he will be painting and explaining the process of live bird drawing. This will be very interesting and an educational opportunity. Since Montgomery County Public Schools are closed on this day, this might be a great opportunity to expose your child to art and wildlife. Because we will have a live bird present, only individuals over the age of eight(8) will be permitted. The event is free and open to the public.
Friday, October 17th from 2:00-4:00 pm, Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Center, Alexander Black House in Blacksburg, VA:
Doug will conduct an art demonstration where attendees will observe him painting a wildlife picture using ink and watercolor, explaining his approach and methodology as he works. The event is free and open to the public. Friday, October 17th from 5:00-7:00 pm, Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Center, Alexander Black House in Blacksburg, VA: Doug will also be doing an author talk and wildlife slide presentation. Doug has written over 30 books and over 30 songs. The event is free and open to the public.
